Beginner (8) Time reference / 〜ませんか?/ Word Order

Please watch this “Homework Club video” to practice what we have learned!

Hi everyone, it’s Hanako!

What made you to learn Japanese?

I learned Japanese literature for four years at university.

In the same building was the English major.

I thought students majoring in English would become the bridges between Japan and foreign countries.

However, our professors told us this.

“People who become the bridge between Japan and foreign countries are you, Japanese major girls!

You learn Japanese culture through Japanese literature in depth, and you will be able to introduce what you learn to people all over the world!”

I am glad that I teach Japanese to you now.

Someday I would like to introduce Japanese literature as well.

Today, we are learning,

(1) Time Reference
(2) 〜ませんか?
(3) Word Order
(4) Frequency (and infrequency) Adverbs

(1) Time Reference

We have learned Particle ”に” . Now, let’s look at more examples.

I will go to Osaka on Sunday.
日曜日にちようび に 大阪おおさかきます。

I get up at 10:45.
10時45分じゅうじよんじゅうごふん きます。

I will go back to Japan in September.
9月くがつ 日本にほんかえります。

For these, we shouldn’t add “に”。

I will come here tomorrow.
あした ここに ます。
I watch TV every evening.
毎晩まいばん テレビ を ます。

<It’s OK to add に or omit に for these. Either way is fine!>

I read the newspaper in the morning.
あさ(に)新聞しんぶん を みます。

What will you do on weekends?
週末しゅうまつ(に)なに を しますか?

Don’t you want to ~?

(Present tense / negative form / Question) = Invitation

Would you like to have lunch with me?
ランチ を ませんか

Sounds good!

Will you play soccer with me?
サッカー を しませんか

Um, it’s slightly (inconvenient for me at this moment)

(3)Word Order

Japanese sentences are flexible and follow a different sentence structure from English.
Verbs have to always come at the end.

わたし は、今日きょう 図書館としょかん で 日本語にほんご を 勉強べんきょうします。 I will study Japanese in the library today.
topic time place object verb

You can change the order like this.
今日、私は、 日本語 を 図書館で 勉強します。

私 は よく 7時ごろ うち へ 帰ります。 I often go back home at around seven.
topic frequency time goal verb

よく 私は、 うちへ 7時ごろ 帰ります。

(4) Frequency Adverbs

There are many Frequency Adverbs in Japanese other than this.
Also, let’s learn about the adverbs which describe how infrequent an activity or an event is.

毎日まいにち (everyday)
よく (often)
ときどき (sometimes)
ぜんぜん〜ません (do not at all)
あまり〜ません (Not often)

わたしは 毎日まいにち 走ります。
I run everyday.

私は よく 運動うんどうします。
I often exercise.

私 は ときどき 図書館としょかん に きます。
I sometimes go to the library.

私 は ぜんぜん テレビ を ません
I do not watch TV at all.

いちろうさん は あまり 勉強べんきょう しません。

Ichiro does not study much.

We will learn more about frequency adverb in intermediate class.
